“Solis is launching an exciting new model of R&D services to support the growing AgriFoodTech startup ecosystem,” said Robb FraleyPhD., former CTO Monsanto Corporation and winner of the 2013 World Food Prize. “Addressing global climate, food security and sustainability challenges requires new and improved crops. Solis will help scientists accelerate the discovery and commercialization of these important advances.
Carl CasaleSenior Partner at venture capital firm AgTech Ospraie Ag Science, explains: “Startups face barriers such as high equipment costs and the need to develop specialized capabilities and talent across a wide range of business needs. research that are not necessarily at the heart of their activity. Outsourcing this capability, rather than creating complex processes in-house, will help innovators test more new ideas, faster.”
Solis was founded by BioGenerator, the startup arm of BioSTL, in collaboration with startup executives Martha Schlicher, Mary Fernandesand David Smoller to fill a need for specialized research support. In addition to equity-based financing provided by BioGenerator Ventures, Solis has leveraged IN2 funding to strengthen its operational capacities. The team launched science operations at [email protected] Laboratories in Saint Louis’ 39 Northern District of Innovation. Mary FernandesPhD., will serve as President of Solis, bringing 25 years of R&D expertise in AgTech and genomics at Bayer and Monsanto.
“We want to help scientists and startups by centralizing multiple siled and expensive tools and processes into one convenient platform,” Fernandes said. “We have the initial contracts in place, our core technical team is in place and we are already expanding. Saint Louis’ AgriFoodTech’s thriving ecosystem is the perfect home for us.”
The company plans to continually add new services and will expand beyond its primary focus of soybeans and corn to include additional plant species based on customer demand.
